Dr. Panchanathan Steps Down: Impact Beyond NSF

WASHINGTON, D.C. | April 26, 2025 — Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, a renowned Indian-American scientist and a former guest on Indianness, has officially stepped down as the 15th Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), marking the end of a historic chapter in American science leadership. His resignation was shared with NSF employees and the public earlier this week, concluding nearly five years at the helm of the agency, where he was instrumental in shaping U.S. science and innovation strategy.

Dr. Panchanathan’s journey—from his early roots in Chennai to becoming the first Indian-American appointed to lead the NSF—has resonated deeply within the diaspora. Throughout his tenure, he pushed boundaries, championing inclusive innovation and expanding access to research and education. Under his leadership, the NSF not only weathered unprecedented challenges but also entered a new era of technological ambition and equity.

“Dr. Panchanathan exemplifies the spirit of global Indian leadership,” said Sanjay Puri, Founder of Indianness. “He combined vision with humility, academic rigor with a profound belief in access and inclusion. His leadership elevated not just institutions, but communities. We were honored to host him on Indianness, where he spoke candidly about building ecosystems of innovation that transcend borders and backgrounds.”

In his appearance on the Indianness podcast, Dr. Panchanathan spoke deeply about the importance of democratizing innovation, believing that true progress is achieved when opportunity is accessible to all—regardless of background, geography, or circumstance. His personal journey from Chennai to the United States, and his belief in building ecosystems where talent from every corner can thrive, have been central themes of his life’s work.

Indianness will continue to spotlight leaders like Dr. Panchanathan who represent the very best of both India and America, and who pave the way for generations to come.
